One thing that is often overlooked is that in Bible times it was very hard if not impossible to keep things from fermenting or spoiling. It would be practically impossible to avoid fermented foods. Wineskins did not produce good wine. That is not how winemakers make wine anymore. We also know that alcohol was used to relieve pain because they did not have other medicines for that. This is why the Bible does not forbid it but also warns of its abuse. We could compare this to prescription pain medicine today. Use it for its purpose but don't abuse it. In America at least it is easy to avoid alcohol, there are so many options. For example, people use the excuse that red wine is good for you because it contains polyphenol, but so many other things contain it to at higher levels, that it is unnecessary to expose oneself to the poison of alcohol.
