Do you remember the hype that once surrounded Barack Obama? Do you recall the godlike setting of his acceptance speech at the 2008 Democratic Convention?

How the mighty have fallen!

Critics of the president are not in the least bit surprised by his poor showing, but many of his supporters are now shaking their heads, wondering what happened to their beloved leader.

In reality, however, Mr. Obama’s presidency was doomed to fail from the outset. Here are four reasons why.

1. You cannot be a rock star and a president.

Simply stated, when you are hailed as a superstar and treated like a rock star, nothing you do as president can live up to such hype. Just think of what happened in those early years of euphoria.

In Germany in 2008, Obama spoke to a crowd of more than 200,000 in conjunction with a large rock concert. This was an extraordinary crowd for an American political leader.

In 2009, Barack Obama was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize before he had done anything of substance, let alone anything remotely worthy of receiving the award. (Yes, this is not a figment of our imagination. This actually happened.)

He was the man. The chosen one. The new leader who would change everything.

But given the American political system, the challenges of the presidency and the cynicism of our nation, this bubble was going to burst sooner rather than later. It was inevitable.

2. Some voters really believed that President Obama would fix everything.

Do you remember the YouTube video of the woman who said that if she was short on her mortgage payment or needed gas for her car, Obama would take care of it?

Whether these were the so-called low information voters or whether it was just a matter of good campaign slogans, many of those who voted for Obama genuinely expected him to be their personal economic savior.

That’s why so many of these people are disillusioned today. What have you done for me lately, Mr. President?

The woman in the aforementioned video, Peggy Joseph, said back in 2008, “I won’t have to worry about putting gas in my car. I won’t have to worry about paying my mortgage.”

This year, as reported by Jerome Corsi, she told filmmaker Joel Gilbert, “During that time, we needed a change, but change for the better, not for the worse.”

She explained, “He had a very big voice, just like the Wizard of Oz. The wizard was this little teeny-teeny tiny man, and I think it’s the same thing with Obama, the man behind the curtain.”

She added, “I was Dorothy in the Wizard of Oz. That’s how I feel.”

“What I learned,” she continued, “is never trust the Wizard. It’s within ourselves to have the determination, the courage, and the brains, to bring us to our destiny.”

3. America did not intend to elect an Alinsky-type radical.

I recently read David Horowitz’s 2009 mini-book “Barack Obama’s Rules for Revolution: The Alinsky Model,” and I was reminded of just how much President Obama had followed the Saul Alinsky model.

Of course, we’ve all heard talk about the president being a socialist and Alinsky being his ideological mentor (although the two never met and Obama apparently distanced himself from some of Alinsky’s viewpoints). But reading this 2009 book in retrospect was eye-opening, beginning with Obama’s words on election eve, 2008, “We are five days away from fundamentally transforming the United States of America.”

Horowitz noted that, “After Obama became a U.S. senator, his wife, Michelle, told a reporter, ‘Barack is not a politician first and foremost. He’s a community activist exploring the viability of politics to make change.’ Her husband commented: ‘I take that observation as a compliment.'”

Had Barack Obama shared his real goals with the American public in either 2008 or 2012, he would never have been elected. To the extent he has successfully carried out his agenda, to that extent he has been rejected by an increasingly large percentage of the population.

When I warned my radio listeners in 2008 that, if elected, Obama would be the most radical pro-abortion, pro-gay activist president in our history, some refused to believe me, only to tell me with regret four years later that they now knew better.

Others continue to come to this same regretful conclusion.

4. He was far too inexperienced.

This, too, was obvious to impartial observers, but given the young senator’s smoke-and-mirrors generated superstar status, this was easily overlooked by the masses.

There’s a reason the Bible speaks against putting novices into leadership positions in the church, one reason being that the person can become filled with pride (see 1 Timothy 3:1-6). How much more does this apply to a position as exalted as the president of the United States?

To be sure, there are two years remaining in Mr. Obama’s presidency, and I continue to pray for a miracle, asking God to change his heart and to make him into a champion of righteousness.

But while such a miracle would be a warmly welcomed surprise and while I encourage everyone to keep praying for our president, the serious shortcomings of his presidency are no surprise at all.
